About Awlgrip

Trusted for over 40 years

Awlgrip has set the standard in decorative yacht coatings worldwide. Known for outstanding quality, a flawless finish, and continuous innovation backed by AkzoNobel expertise, Awlgrip is the benchmark professionals trust.

From planes to boats: the beginning (1973)

It all began when two Eastern Airlines pilots asked Merritt Boat and Engine Works to use Alumigrip paint, originally developed for airplanes, on their boats. The result was stunning.

But there was one problem: “Alumigrip” sounded too specific to aluminum.

Fun Fact: The name “Awlgrip” was born from a happy accident. “Allgrip” was the name chosen at a bar-room table in 1973… but when typed up from a scribbled napkin, one “L” turned into a “W.” The name stuck- and Awlgrip was born.

Becoming a global brand
