World Class Coatings For World Class Yachts

Newcastle Shipyards LLC, manufacturer of high quality, oceangoing motoryachts has been using Awlgrip® products on all its vessels.

These include Project-H, a 164ft custom motoryacht with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, believed to be the largest volume motoryacht of this length in the world. Due to be launched in 2009, this unusual vessel has been cleverly designed by Murray and Associates, with interiors by Claudette Bonneville of Ft. Lauderdale.

Destined to sail the world’s oceans, like many of its successful predecessors from the yard, the yacht is being hand faired using Awlfair, with 545 Epoxy Primer and Awlgrip Matterhorn White topcoat. Project Manager Tim Kings was never in any doubt that Awlgrip would be his system of choice for this trailblazing yacht “Awlgrip’s service and after sales support is second to none and its products are the finest you can get for pleasure yachts,” he explained.

"If you put Awlgrip on, no-one questions the paint"

Another Newcastle Shipyards yacht to receive the finishing touches only Awlgrip can give is the ‘Cortina’, designed by MG Burvenich, a 114ft all-aluminum trideck destined to sail mainly in the Carribean and along the US east coast. This distinctive custom yacht features a pneumatic elevator, enclosed aft dining, a full Portugese deck and exterior lifts. One of the factors for choosing Awlgrip, highlighted by the manager on this project, Bob Vaaler, is the affect on the resale value of having an Awlgrip system. “If you put Awlgrip on, no one questions the paint,” he added.

Cortina features a Whisper Gray hull, Awlgrip Matterhorn White topsides and using a deep blue bottom system. The continued expansion of the yard has been built on the instant success of the yachts it first created, including with the first ‘Expedition’ type yachts, the 102ft ‘Newcastle Explorer’ launched in 2001 and the 125ft Newcastle Voyager two years later.

Newcastle Explorer has been round the world several times and gained notoriety by not only surviving the Tsunami at Phuket, Thailand in December 2004, but helping to rescue many survivors. Most recently launched is the 137ft Expedition yacht True North. The new vessels are following in this tradition.

Combined facilities

After launching the business at Palm Coast, Florida in 1999, Newcastle completely rebuilt the existing shipyard it purchased, creating a new six story construction building, a slipway/bulkheading and added a 1,000 ton marine railway system for hauling and launching vessels up to 200 feet long. In 2008 it merged with Keith Marine, founded by Kevin’s father in 1978, a facility notable for its casino and dinner boats. The merger brought Keith Marine’s large facility in nearby Palatka, Florida with it and all the added skills of a long-established yachtbuilding enterprise. Like its younger partner, Keith Marine was committed from the start to using only the best yacht coating systems – Awlgrip!
