Sportfishing boat for the sport fisherman

Hampton Bays, New York, USA is rich in sportfishing history and the summer playground of the world’s rich and famous, not surprising as it’s near Montauk, NY, a world-class sportfishing site.

Inevitably the area attracts boatyards to service this thriving industry, but one of them – American Maximus Marine – has filled a gap in the market with its own design, mid-size custom sportfishing boat, set to be the first of many similar vessels.

In designing the 47ft ‘Maximus’, the business went right back to the drawing board, revisiting traditional techniques from the days when quality was paramount and doing things the best, rather than the quickest, way was standard practice. Early on, this led to the decision to use Awlgrip® to ensure the finish matched the quality of the rest of the vessel.

“Quality, craftsmanship, durability and doing it the right way, down to the smallest details, were the main drivers in the design and construction of this vessel, “explained Bill Demchak, founder and owner. “Awlgrip products help convey this message and they have performed that duty flawlessly.”

As a custom boat builder, the shop is now able to offer custom sportfish boats of almost any dimension.

Traditionally styled, the Maximus has a ‘classic’ day boat design with an open aft bulkhead, but with a modern fast hull. Without raised engine boxes, however, she can easily be built as an enclosed saloon or an express. In fact, her timeless styling, clean lines and proven cold molded construction, with attention always focused on ‘fishability’, have resulted in considerable interest among sport fishing enthusiasts.

With a cruising speed of 30 knots and a range of 450 miles, her performance is as good as her looks. Inside the high quality finish includes teak veneers and plenty of storage space, with clever touches to add to the comfort of her passengers.

In selecting the Awlgrip systems, builders Tom Schaefer and Chet Darenberg were quite at home – they have been using these products for their entire careers and knew they could be relied upon to offer the highest levels of durability.

The system included Awlfair, which sets the industry standard with its bonding strength, fairing performance and durability; and Ultra Build, High Build and 545 Epoxy Primers. The topcoat is Awlgrip Matterhorn White on the topsides, Ice Blue on the hull and Oyster White for the interiors. Wood is protected using ‘the Ultimate Brightwork System’. This combines the color highlights and sealing ability of Awl-Spar Varnish, for a traditional look, with the UV protection and abrasion resistance of Awl-brite Clear Urethane in a fast recoat, easy to repair combination of varnish and urethane coatings.

“The product is worthy of the boat and the boat is worthy of the product, both combine to enhance each others values,” Tom commented.

Maximus American Marine

Bill Demchak founded Maximus American Marine in 2005 to build a mid forty foot custom sportfishing vessel of Palm Beach quality and construction. This was at a time when other custom sportfish builders were giving up building smaller vessels in favor of boats of over 60 feet. Driven by love of sportfishing, rather than by profit, he found two experienced marine industry builders who share his passion for quality - Tom Schaefer and Chet Darenberg. The team set up shop near Bill’s Hampton Bays home and hired naval architect Erwin Gerards of EG Designs who has designed for other distinguished custom boat builders, to further perfect the design and engineering of the Maximus series.
