A breathtaking 30m (100ft) sailing superyacht weighing less than 50 tonnes; truly exceptional
‘Gaia’, the Spirit 100 superyacht of supreme elegance and performance, recently left the Spirit shipyard to cruise the Mediterranean and take part in this summer’s races. This includes the eagerly anticipated Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Sardinia (6 – 12th September 2009), one of the highlights of the Mediterranean yachting season.
Designed and built in-house by Spirit to the highest quality, she represents state of the art technology allied with uncompromising beauty and style, bringing outstanding sailing performance.
Built using modern lightweight wood/epoxy technology with laser cut stainless steel-reinforced ring frames, the Spirit 100 is very different from most previous superyachts. The superyacht world has seen everything from extreme minimalism to flamboyant complexity, but rarely, if ever before, has a superyacht combined such classic beauty, laminar wood construction, the latest underwater foil profiles and a highly efficient modern rig.
The lines and construction of the hull result in a yacht so strong and lightweight that, with a powerful rig, fin & bulb keel and a semi-balanced spade rudder, she takes maximum advantage of the elements resulting in an easy sailing performance where wind speed and boat speed are often as one. The hull form is perfectly drawn allowing the yacht to move through the water creating minimal wake and a barely discernible quarter wave.
Her exterior represents all the purity of line and elegance that attract admirers wherever Spirits sail. She is finished with only the highest quality materials including the finest range of Awlgrip paints. The Spirit 100 uses the full Awlgrip system from primers and fillers right up to Awlcraft 2000 topcoat; as used by all Spirits over the last ten years. GAIA had a full re-spray this winter to change her color from Whisper Gray to Aqua Mist as part of the owner’s special request. Spirit Yachts use Awlgrip because it's a total system with full compatibility - having experienced exceptionally good long-term results.
Spirit Yachts was established in 1993 and is led by Sean McMillan. The company is now widely recognised as the most significant builder of modern Classics worldwide with a reputation for craftsmanship that is difficult (if not impossible) to match. Spirit Yachts has an unrivalled in-depth knowledge of contemporary wood/epoxy techniques which has been acquired through the building of many varied yachts in this superb method.
